20 detained in police operation against socialists in Istanbul

At least 20 people were detained in the operation which was carried out as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in 2024.

Police forces conducted house raids in Istanbul early Tuesday morning, targeting members and executives of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Socialist Women's Assemblies (SKM), Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF) and Science Education Culture Art Research Foundation (BEKSAV).

At least 20 people were detained in the operation, which was carried out as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in 2024.

Those detained include ESP Co-Chair Deniz Aktaş, ESP Central Executive Board member Okan Danacı, SKM General Spokesperson Tanya Kara, SKM General Assembly member Senem Nur Pektaş, SGDF Co-Chair Berfin Polat, trade unionists Meliha Kayacı and Serpil Topal, ETHA reporter Züleyha Müldür, ESP members Ezgi Gürbüz, Emrah Topaloğlu, Cafer Erözsoy, ESP Sultangazi District Co-Chair Gamze Toprak, Sezgin Zevkibol, Leyla Can, Simay Ada Kart, Erol Tunç, Eylül Öztürk, İbrahim Akbay, Berkan Deveci, Beyza Nur Samancı.

The Law Office of the Oppressed (EHB) stated that there is a confidentiality order on the investigation file and a 24-hour restriction on detainees’ access to lawyers.
