30 detained for participating in Newroz celebration in Bodrum

Turkish police detained 30 people in Bodrum for participating in Newroz celebrations.

A series of raids took place in Bodrum district of Muğla on Tuesday morning. Police stormed several homes and detained at least 30 people. Those involved are accused of taking part in the Newroz celebration on March 20. They are said to have shouted banned slogans.

The Newroz celebrations in Turkey and Kurdistan took place this year with the demand for freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. Millions participated in the large-scale rallies. Since Newroz, the Turkish state has tried to nip social upheaval in the bud with mass arrests.
