51 out of 60 people who had been detained in Taksim on Monday have started a hunger strike as they are still being held in custody at police headquarters.
Dozens of people were taken into custody during the violent police attack on Gezi protestors on Istanbul's İstiklal Avenue on Monday evening, including TMMOB (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Secretary Mücella Yapıcı, Secretary General of Istanbul Medical Board, Ali Çerkezoğlu, Chamber of Electrical Engineers Istanbul Branch Chair Beyza Metin, HDK (People's Democratic Congress) Executive Council member Ender İmrek.
Detainees were expected to be referred to court today but police have extended detention periods for two more days.
Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu officially opened the Gezi Park to public on Monday after three weeks of closure since 15 June when police forcibly evicted the park, using excessive force against the people in the area. The park was re-closed to public and police started to attack protestors in the park after the governor left the area Monday afternoon. The violent police intervention in Taksim continued till late night. Many people were injured, including those critically wounded, and dozens of others were taken into custody. The park was re-opened to public at night.
