53 politicians from various political parties in Sweden have issued a joint statement demanding an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan.
The statement said Ocalan has been prevented from meeting with his lawyers since June 27, 2011 and pointed to the hunger strike launched by Leyla Guven which has continued to spread to others.
The Swedish politicians stated their concern for the health of DTK Co-chair and HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Guven, who has been on an indefinite nonalternating hunger strike for the last 84 days.
The joint statement called on the international community to pressure the Council of Europe (CoE) and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) so Turkey will end the isolation imposed upon Ocalan.
The politicians said Leyla Guven has been forced to go on a hunger strike due to the rising racism and intolerance and rejected demands for a peaceful solution, and stressed the importance of the outside world amplifying her voice.
Among signatories are Left Party MEP Malin Bjork, Greens Europe MEP Bodil Valero, Social Democratic Party MPs Anders Österberg and Kadir Kasirga, Left Party MPs Daniel Riazat, Ilona Szatmari Waldau, Lorena Delgado Varas, Jens Holm, Ali Esbati, Birger Lahti, Momodue Malcolm Jallow, Amineh Kakabaveh and Håkan Svennelig as well as former Left Party leader Lars Ohly.
