8.5 million people are unemployed in Turkey

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions Research Centre (DİSK-AR) reported that 8.5 million people are unemployed in the country.

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions Research Centre (DİSK-AR) published its Unemployment and Employment Report on Thursday. According to the data of DİSK-AR, the seasonally adjusted and broadly defined number of unemployed citizens was 8 million 459 thousand in January 2022. Compared to the pre-pandemic period, the number of unemployed increased by 1.1 million. The broadly defined female unemployment was recorded as 28.8 percent, and the narrowly defined youth unemployment as 21.6 percent.

WOMEN'S UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE RISE

Female unemployment continues to be highest among all unemployment types. While the narrowly defined unemployment rate was 10.3 percent for men, it was 13.6 percent for women. Female unemployment increased by 78 thousand in the last one year, and male unemployment decreased by 239 thousand. The broadly defined unemployment (labor force idle) was 19.7 percent for men and 28.8 percent for women.

As of January 2022, the seasonally adjusted and narrowly defined unemployment for women stood at 1 million 522 thousand and the number of broadly defined unemployment was 3 million 725 thousand. For men, the number of narrowly defined unemployment was recorded as 2 million 337 thousand and the number of broadly defined unemployment as 4 million 727 thousand.
