80 people detained in Taksim

In a statement about today's police attack against Gezi protestors in Istanbul, Taksim Solidarity Platform said that 35 representatives and executives of the trade bodies, democratic NGOs and political parties that constitute the platform have been taken into custody by police Monday evening.

The platform remarked that 80 people have been taken into custody since the beginning of the brutal police intervention today.

The platform strongly condemned the police violence and detentions and remarked that the repression of the people will not achieve to restrict basic human rights nor the solidarity of Gezi protestors. The platform called for the ending of police violence and urgent release of all those detained today.

The platform announced a press conference to take place at Taksim Hill Hotel tomorrow at 10.30 a.m.

A seventeen year-old boy has reportedly had a brain hemorrhage and been hospitalized after being hit on the head with tear gas canister in the neighborhood of Tarlabaşı near Taksim.

Police also fired gas canister in grounds of the British Consulate. British Consul-General Leigh Turner published a picture of tear gas canister found in the garden of the consulate, saying that the one on the picture was one of the six canisters found there tonight.
