Israel-Iran war: Mutual attacks continue on the ninth day

As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues on its ninth day, tensions in the region continue to escalate. Amid mutual attacks from both sides, casualties and destruction are mounting.

The Iranian Ministry of Health announced that more than 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 injured in Israeli airstrikes to date. One of the heaviest losses in Iran occurred during Israel's latest attacks targeting “military infrastructure” in the Khuzestan region. Multiple explosions were also reported in the cities of Ahvaz and Bandar-e Mahshahr.

In Israel's “Operation Narnia” targeting Iranian nuclear scientists, Isar Tabatabai Gomsheh, a graduate of Sharif University in Tehran, was killed at his home along with his wife. Iran had previously confirmed the deaths of nine nuclear physicists, including Fereydun Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.

UAV attacks against Israel

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced this morning that eight Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entered Israeli airspace within just one hour, and that most of them were shot down. Israel also stated that Saeed Izadi, an Iranian commander allegedly involved in planning the October 2023 Hamas attacks, and Behnam Shahriyari, commander of the Jerusalem Force, were killed in the operations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the attacks as “legitimate defense against a nuclear threat,” and it appears that the domestic public largely supports this stance. According to a poll by the Israel Democracy Institute, 82% of Jewish Israelis support the attacks on Iran.

Internet outages in Iran, which have been ongoing for more than three days, have sparked widespread outrage, but access has reportedly been partially restored as of the weekend. The outages have both blocked the flow of information and increased concern among the public.
