İmralı Delegation: We will apply for a meeting with Öcalan next week

Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a member of the İmralı Delegation, stated that they would apply for a meeting with Abdullah Öcalan next week.

On 26 November, the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chairs Tuncer Bakırhan and Tülay Hatimoğulları applied to the Ministry of Justice for a face-to-face meeting with Kurdish People’s Leader, Abdullah Öcalan.

On 28 December, Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) MPs Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan travelled to Imrali Prison Island to meet with Abdullah Öcalan.

Following the meeting with Öcalan, the İmralı Delegation held a series of talks with the political parties in parliament. The delegation, which now includes Ahmet Türk, the deposed co-mayor of Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, also met with Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, former co-chairs of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), both of whom have been behind bars since 2016.

The delegation is expected to pay another visit to İmralı soon. Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a member of the delegation, announced on Wednesday that they would make an application as soon as possible for a meeting with Öcalan next week.

The DEM Party delegation's meeting with Öcalan took place amid discussions on possible talks with Öcalan. MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) Leader Devlet Bahçeli shook hands with the DEM Party group at the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) on 1 October, starting discussions about a possible resolution process with the Kurds. In his speech at the party's group meeting in mid-October, Bahçeli further called on Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı Prison to “unilaterally declare the end of terrorism and the liquidation of his organization”.

Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan were members of the İmralı Delegation during the talks between the Turkish state and Abdullah Öcalan between 2013 and 2015. On 28 February 2015, the ‘Dolmabahçe Consensus’ was declared in Istanbul. The agreement was a ten-point plan negotiated between Abdullah Öcalan and the Turkish state to resolve the Kurdish question. The peace process was terminated shortly afterward by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan."

During the meeting, recent developments in the Middle East and Turkey were discussed, and Mr. Öcalan proposed constructive solutions to counter the imposed scenarios of a bleak future.
The main points of his thoughts and approach can be summarized as follows:

- Strengthening Turkish-Kurdish fraternity anew is not only a historical responsibility but also a matter of decisive importance and urgency for all peoples.

- To ensure the success of this process, it is essential for all political circles in Turkey to rise above narrow and short-term calculations, take initiative, act constructively, and contribute positively. Undoubtedly, one of the most significant platforms for such contributions will be the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

- Recent incidents in Gaza and Syria have demonstrated that the resolution of this issue, which has been aggravated by external interventions, can no longer be postponed. The contributions and proposals of the opposition are also valuable to successfully carry out efforts proportional to the gravity of this matter.

- I possess the necessary competence and determination to contribute positively to the new paradigm supported by Mr. Bahçeli and Mr. Erdoğan.

- The delegation will convey my approach to both the state and political circles. In light of this, I am ready to take the necessary positive steps and make the required call.

- All these efforts will elevate the country to the level it deserves and serve as an invaluable guide for democratic transformation.

- This is an era of peace, democracy, and fraternity for Turkey and the region.
