A torture centre, not a hospital

Detained residents of Istanbul's Gülsuyu neighborhood are being subject to torture at the Haseki Training and Research Hospital where they go through medical examinations under police surveillance.

The neighborhood has recently witnessed intense police mobilization after 21-year-old Hasan Ferit Gedik was killed during clashes between residents, drug gangs and police, early October.

36 people were taken into custody following a police operation in Gülsuyu, Sancaktepe and Gazi neighborhoods on 7 October. The police operation against nearly 60 addresses in three neighborhoods  targeted the members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), People's Front organization and readers of the Partizan magazine.

Detainees who were taken to Haseki Training and Research Hospital for medical examinations are being forced to get saliva testing for refusing to give DNA samples. Detainees are referred to the rabies department, with their hands reversely put in handcuffs, and forced to open their mouth and give the test while being threatened with a stick. The treatment of the detainees has also been performed under police surveillance.

Lawyers from the Contemporary Lawyers Association (ÇHD) and the Legal Bureau of the People had also been forced to get saliva testing after their detention on 18 January. Istanbul Chamber of Medicine investigation into the incident is still going on.

Lawyer Gülhan Kaya from the Legal Bureau of the Oppressed pointed out that this forced treatment was only performed at the Haseki Hospital, noting that the treatment meant blacklisting detainees and violating their right to remain silent.
