‘Achievements of the Kurdish people are being erased’

‘Achievements of the Kurdish people are being erased’

Holding a common press conference in Diyarbakýr, a number of political parties and civil society organizations demanded concrete steps for a permanent peace, calling the state to end military operations and the PKK to silence weapons. The statement remarked that the Iranian and Turkish attacks in Federal Kurdistan Region aim to leave the Kurds without a status by erasing their acquisitions.

Including Democratic Society Congress (DTK), Peace and Democracy Party(BDP), Rights and Freedoms Party (HAK-PAR), Participatory Democracy Party (KADEP), Nubihar Association, Association for Human Rights and Solidarity for Oppressed People (MAZLUMDER), Human Rights Association (IHD), Diyarbakir Medical Association, Kurdish Writers 'Association, Association of the Assyrians, Armenians Association, Diyarbakir Chamber of Commerce, the Southeastern Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (GÜNSÝAD) and TZPKurdî, 20 political parties and civil society organizations held a press conference in Diyarbakýr about the recent political process.

While the meeting was attended by DTK Co-Chair and Van MP Aysel Tuðluk, BDP Group Chairman and Hakkari MP Selahattin Demirtas, KADEP Chairman Serafettin Elci, HAK-PAR Chairman Bayram Bozyel and Muþ MP Demir Çelik, the press statement was made by Diyarbakýr MP Þerafettin Elçi. Elçi said the followings;

“The wave of violence which has been incited in recent days as a result of the political power’s insistence on a deadlock in the Kurdish question doesn’t only lead to loss of lives in all circles but also threatens the democratic solution choice and the peace environment. The attitude of the government officials, who are facing the task of democratization and protection of basic human rights and in particular solving the Kurdish problem, have reached worrying aspects towards the events occurring in these days.”

Remarking that some international powers are also supporting the concurrent Iranian and Turkish attacks in Federal Region of Kurdistan, Elçi stated that these attacks aim to re-design the Middle East and once more leave Kurds without a status and achievement. Elçi continued as follows; "The public follows the new security concept and the Prime Minister’s moving with a sense of revenge with deep concern. It is known well that the same concept was tried under the name of 'total warfare' in the 1990s and failed to serve to the solution of the problem. The public knows that all kinds of violent security measures have led to more tear, more bloodshed and deeper pains. There are enough experiences and reasons to see this truth and to abandon the methods of violence.”

Underlining that all circles, in particular the government, need to bring the peace choice primarily to the agenda, Elçi added; “As civil society organizations and Kurdish political parties and movements, we would like to mention once again that the solution to the Kurdish problem can be reached through democratic and peaceful steps, not with the policies of violence. We demand concrete and realistic steps for the formation of a peaceful democratic environment and permanence of peace. The first step of this purpose is the ending of military operations by the state and silence of weapons by the PKK.”

DEMÝRTAÞ: DIALOGUE DOES NOT HARM ANYONE

Asked about the BDP and DTK’s demand to meet with Ocalan in Imralý, BDP Group Chairman Selahattin Demirtaþ said the followings; “If our demand is approved, we will express our opinions in Imralý about the BDP and DTK’s perspective and political approach towards the process, about what we can and should do to enable the conflict environment turn to a process of negotiation and peace as soon as possible. We will also ask Ocalan about his opinions and proposals concerning the subject. Dialogue and negotiation will be for the benefit of everyone and we expect the Ministry of Justice and all other governmental institutions to treat our demand seriously. I hope they will pave the way for the process so that we can increase our contribution to this process”.

Demirtaþ added that the BDP hasn’t abdicated the Parliament, adding that the party has got a parliamentary group and attends the general assembly works in the Parliament.
