Sevim Uçar Dinçaslan, one of the victims of the 12 September 1980 coup in Turkey, died in Switzerland, where she lived in exile.
Sevim Uçar Dinçaslan lost her battle with cancer in the city of Delemont where she had been receiving treatment for 3 years.
Dinçaslan, originally from Dersim had spent a part of her life in Mersin. She was detained in the darkness of the 12 September military coup and was tortured for 90 days.
Dinçaslan had to be exiled to Switzerland when the state pressures on both her and her family increased after the prison process. Dinçaslan, who never stood back from her political activity during her exile, is known by the people around her as "everyone's sister".
Dinçaslan, mother of two, is expected to be buried in the Çukurova plain (Mersin), as this was her desire.
Hüseyin Dinçaslan, son of Sevim, gave information about the funeral procedures and said: "My mother said in her will that she wanted to be buried under the sun of Çukurova, in Mersin."
Hüseyin Dinçaslan added: "Unfortunately, because of the Covid-19 outbreak, my brother and I will not be able to stand by on my mother's last journey. This is a very painful situation for us, if we go to Turkey we will quarantine for 14 day."
The European Socialist Women's Association has published a written condolences message for Sevim Uçar Dinçaslan in which it said: "When she was 17 years old, she met the fascist and torturer face of the 12 September 1980 military coup. She resisted 90 days under heavy torture and interrogatios, without saying a word about her party and comrades. She was subjected to the 'special' attention of torturer Hanefi Avcı. After a short detention period, she was forced to take refuge in Switzerland as a result of pressure on her and her relatives. She was the Swiss delegate to the International Congress on the forcibly disappeared people."
