Kurdish activists have been staging a sit-in protest in front of the UN Geneva Office since January 25 in protest at the inaction of the international community in the face of Turkey's expansionist policy and the genocidal attacks on Kurdistan. The central demand is freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, who is considered a key figure for a dignified solution to the Kurdish question. The activists resume their protest in a tent they set up in front of the UN Geneva Office every Wednesday.
Activists gathered at the tent offered French-language books by Abdullah Öcalan and brochures on the ideas of the Kurdish leader. In parallel, statements about the content and purpose of the protest action were read out.
At the beginning of the vigil, a minute of silence was observed in memory of those martyred in the resistance against the Turkish invasion in the Zap, Metina and Avashin areas held by the guerrilla.
In a speech here, Geneva Democratic Kurdish Society co-chair Salih Sağlam expressed his gratitude to the guerrilla for defending Kurdistan in all four parts of the country against occupation and genocidal attacks. He said, "The Turkish occupying state is losing strength in the face of the great resistance of the guerrilla and is moving toward defeat. The importance of the Kurdish people's struggle is shown very recently in the revelations about internal conflicts within the state. As people from Kurdistan, we will continue our campaign 'Time for Freedom' everywhere and thus win our struggle against fascism."
