Activists in Cyprus and Armenia pay tribute to Martyrs of October

October martyrs were commemorated in Limassol, Cyprus and in the village of Araski in Armenia.

October martyrs were commemorated in Limassol, Cyprus and in the village of Araski in Armenia paying tribute to Martyr Bêrîtan (Gülnaz Karataş).

The commemoration organized by the Kurdish People's Assembly and the Women's Initiative was held at the Theophilos Kurdish Cultural Center.

The memorial, attended by the people of Kurdistan and their friends, started with a minute silence.

The area had been decorated with photographs of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the October martyrs.

Speaking on behalf of the Kurdish Women's Initiative, Fatma Doğan, said that Kurdish women reached a free public reality with great resistance and a glorious struggle and underlined the sacrifice and heroism of martyr Beritan who threw herself off a cliff in 1992 to avoid ending up in the hands of the peshmergas, then collaborating with Turkey against the PKK.

Fatma Doğan said that martyr Beritan drew a great revolutionary line against all kinds of reaction and fascism in Kurdistan and the Middle East, and added that the AKP-MHP fascism will soon be destroyed.

The memorial continued with the screening of the film Beritan and ended with slogans.

Beritan commemorated in Araski

Martyr Beritan was commemorated in the village of Araski in the Oktoberyan region of Armenia.

The memorial organized by the Free Women's Union started with a minute silence.

Çiçek Rizgar, member of the Free Women's Union said: “When we talk about friend Beritan and her action, we think of resistance and rebellion against betrayal. The resistance and rebellion of Beritan was against the betrayal and feudal mentality among the Kurds. With her action and stance, she showed that a free and struggling woman will never surrender to such a mentality."

Drawing attention to the resistance in Heftanin, Rizgar also said that the Kurdish women are fighting a great resistance based on Beritan's legacy.

Şirin Kalaşyan, the Oktoberian representative of the Free Women's Union, said in her speech: “We women got to know ourselves thanks to Beritan and thousands of martyred heroes as well as leader Ocalan. For this, we will never forget our martyrs. Our struggle is to realize their dreams and will continue in their line."
