Activists protest attacks on Shengal in Berlin

Activists called on European governments to stop turning a blind eye to ongoing attacks on Yazidis and emphasized that the Kurds have the right to self-determination against this war and violence.

Berlin Yazidi Women's Council, Dest-Dan Women's Council and Nav-Berlin launched a three-day demonstration to protest against the attacks on Shengal.

The first day of the tent protest took place on May 9 between 15:00 and 18:00 in front of the Reichstag, the Federal Parliament in Berlin, Germany.

The protestors said that Shengal was being attacked not only by the invading Turkish army but also by the forces of the Mustafa al-Kadhimi government. They demanded an end to “Turkey's illegal attacks against Shengal.”

“The Iraqi army has been attacking the Yazidi city of Shengal since May 2, 2022. The attacks are targeting Êzidxan Asayish (local public security) and Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ). The fact that the Iraqi attack on Shengal is simultaneous with the Turkish occupation in Zap and Avaşîn points to a coordinated operation under Erdogan’s leadership,” a statement on behalf of the Yazidi Women's Councils umbrella organization, Sîwana Mekanên Jinên Êzidî (SMJÊ), said.

“These military actions of the al-Kadhimi government coordinated with Turkey have only one goal: to destroy the Yazidi identity through genocide and femicide. The existence and freedom of the Yazidi people is seen as a threat by Turkey. Erdogan's extermination plan targets the Kurdish population in the Middle East. These ambitions of Erdogan and his fascist allies MHP and jihadist militias are endorsed by the EU-NATO and notably by the German federal government.”

The SMJÊ statement called on European governments to stop turning a blind eye to the issue and emphasized that the Kurds have the right to self-determination against this war and violence.

A banner displayed on the tent read “The agreement between Erbil and Baghdad against Shengal is a new betrayal targeting the Yazidis.”

The protest will continue today at the same place and time.
