Ahtisaari visiting Turkey today

Former Finnish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari is coming to Turkey today.

Ahtisaari will meet with Republican People’s Party (CHP) President Kemal Kýlýçdaroðlu and Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ. It is reported that Ahtisaari will primarily focus on the Kurdish issue during his meetings.

Ahtisaari will also meet with the EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Baðýþ, President Abdullah Gül and Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmet Davutoðlu.

In his visit to Turkey and meeting with Kurdish politicians in 2010, Ahtisaari said Turkish state must negotiate with Kurdish leader Öcalan and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for a solution to the Kurdish Question. Ahtisaari told Kurdish politicians that Kurdish Question is the most important problem of Turkey and it is also a problem of democracy. He said Turkey will not join the EU unless a democratic solution for the Kurdish question is found. He also said that Turkish state must negotiate Kurdish leader Öcalan and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for a solution to the Kurdish Question.

It was Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan who first suggested the name of United Nation's Kosovo Special Delegate and ex-Finland President Martti Ahtisaari.

Two years ago, Öcalan had remarked that "there is a need to quickly establish a commission of 'wise' men. The members of the commission should be chosen by the state. It could be intellectuals and 'wise' men like Ýlker Türkmen, for example." Öcalan also stated that "this commission should include people like Ahtisaari, whom I especially recommend. The committee members can hold talks with both sides and weapons can be laid down in order to create favorable conditions for the work of the commission. This is actually not something new, it is a method used worldwide. Such a 'wise' men commission has been set up in the process of conflict resolution in Ireland, Kosovo and South Africa.
