AKP supporters rally in front of Turkish consulate in Hamburg

The AKP foreign organization UID has staged a "martyr remembrance" on the anniversary of the "coup night" in front of the Turkish consulate in Hamburg.

The AKP foreign organization "Union of International Democrats" (UID, formerly UETD) also took the anniversary of the "coup night" of 15-16 July 2016 as an opportunity in Hamburg to stage the events in the sense of the AKP's narrative as a cult for "national unity" and supposed defense of democracy. For this purpose, they were able to mobilize about 150 supporters who gathered at 6 p.m. at Gänsemarkt and then marched to the Turkish consulate. A rally was then held in front of the Consulate.

As usual, the UID practised cynical double-talk. While Recep Erdoğan used the confused events to accelerate an autocratic reconstruction of the Turkish state, to murder thousands and to put tens of thousands in prison, their representatives declared the victims of the coup to be "martyrs of democracy".

In one of the few speeches held in German, they jumped particularly eagerly on the democracy train, which according to Erdoğan had only bridged a stopover, and complained about the lack of support for European democracies in their persecution of opposition and dissenters. Apart from that, the supporters of the association tried hard to gloss over nationalistic kitsch and religious symbolism. Heroic songs and prayers alternated and at the end red and white balloons flew up into the sky.

Since the majority of the speeches were held in Turkish, it was clear that the event was not aimed at the general public, but was primarily intended to strengthen the national identity in the Turkish diaspora.

This is in line with the long-term strategy of the Turkish state to establish a political lobby in other European countries and to build up a mobilising among the people of Turkish origin in Europe.
