April 2009-October 2011: nearly 7500 people arrested

Meral Danýþ Beþtaþ, BDP (Peace and Democracy) co-deputy president and party spokesperson on human rights has today published the figures related to the last police operations against the party. Between 14 April 2009 (right after the local elections) and today, 7,748 people have been taken into custody. Of these, 3, 895 have been remanded in custody. It means that in the past 30 months 9 Kurds a day have been arrested.

Beþtaþ underlined that in the past 6 months alone a total of 4,148 people have been taken into custody. Of these, 548 have been remanded in custody.

Basically all of the arrests have been carried out in the context of the so called "KCK" (Kurdish Communities Union) operation, which allows the arrest of virtually every party member or activist, as well as human rights activists, deputies and local administrators.

Taking a closer look to the "biographies" or the people arrested, we will find that there , 2 head and 4 vice presidents of County General Council, 29 council Councillors, 10 mayors, 8 deputy mayors, 2 Municipal deputy presidents, 2 former mayors.
