Arrest warrant for Paris killer William M. lifted on health grounds

The arrest warrant for murderer William M., who attacked the Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, France, on 23 December and murdered three Kurdish activists, was lifted on the grounds of his health.

69-year-old murderer William M., who attacked the Kurdish Cultural Center, a Kurdish restaurant across from it and a Kurdish hairdresser just ahead, was taken into custody after he was caught with his gun.

A day later, the detention order for the attacker was lifted. The Paris Prosecutor's Office reported that the murderer was taken to the Paris Police Department Psychiatric Hospital, citing his health.

The man was hospitalized in the psychiatric infirmary of the police headquarters, the same source said.

"The doctor who examined the respondent at the end of the afternoon declared that the state of health of the person concerned was not compatible with the measure of police custody", the statement said, adding that "the police custody measure has therefore been lifted pending the presentation of the defendant before an investigating judge when his state of health allows it."

The prosecutor's office stated that the investigation is continuing and announced that the "racist nature" of the incident was taken as the basis of the investigation. In other words, an investigation was launched as a "judicial case" for "racist murders and attempted murder".

Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti said at a press conference with Kurdish representatives that the definition of "racist incident" would not make any difference to the sentence, which is life imprisonment, and that the Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office and the Paris Prosecutor's Office are in constant contact.

Kurdish representatives said that the attack was a “terrorist attack” and rejected the investigation opened by the prosecutor's office. Minister Moretti said that the definition may change according to the elements to be obtained as a result of the examination.
