Australian Green Party MP Abigail Boyd brought the absolute isolation and torture system against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan to the parliamentary agenda.
"Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan has been imprisoned by the Turkish government on the island of İmralı since February 1999 in violation of universal human rights. This is an attack not only on Mr Öcalan but also on the Kurdish people,” said Abigail Boyd in her speech to parliament.
"Mr Öcalan has been denied access to his lawyers since 2019 and to his family since 2021. "This treatment is a clear violation of Turkish and international law and Australia has a responsibility to stand with Mr Öcalan and the Kurdish people in condemning the oppressive and undemocratic treatment by the Turkish authorities," Boyd stated.
Stating that Abdullah Öcalan is “a key player in the Kurdish people's struggle for justice", Boyd emphasised that "Öcalan is the symbol of 100 years of Kurdish resistance against the oppressive Turkish state."
Underlining that Abdullah Öcalan's human rights and freedom should not be negotiated under any circumstances, Boyd called on the New South Wales (NSW) state government to stand in solidarity with the Kurdish people and support the calls for freedom for Abdullah Öcalan.
Boyd also called on the Australian government to "urge the Turkish government to release Abdullah Öcalan under conditions that will allow him to meet with his lawyers and family and ultimately play a role in finding a just and democratic solution to the Turkish Kurdish conflict."
