ENDIKA FROM BASQUE COUNTRY: KURDS LIVE INTERNATIONALISM

Endika from Basque country who moved to Berlin from Barcelona, Catalonia said:

“I am Endika, I’m 33 years old and a social pedagogue. I am from Basque Country, and I live in Germany now.

I learned of the Kurdish issue from many different sources. Years ago, I went on a cycling tour from Spain to Afghanistan and I crossed Turkey and Kurdistan on my way. I saw the situation and the life in Kurdistan. I decided that I would support the plight of the Kurdish people when I got back. When I arrived in Germany, I looked for ways to put this into practice.

I saw that people live and experience internationalism in Kurdistan. I saw that they knew of the struggles of the Basque people, the Catalans, the Palestinians. I decided to implement here this internationalism I saw there.

I came across the protests here by chance, I learned about them and I believed that their cause was righteous, so I joined.

This is my first time going on a hunger strike for over 2 days. Prisoners have held many hunger strikes in the Basque country, and there have been solidarity hunger strikes on the outside. 18 year olds would start a 2-day hunger strike and they would go to school like that. They put a sign on their lapels to show that they were on hunger strike, so they took the hunger strikes to the schools and to the public space. I have participated in such protests.

Here I see the collectivism and the atmosphere I saw in Diyarbakir and Silopi. I experience it now first hand. I see that the social connections between people are strong and that they consider it part of the political struggle.

When I lived in Barcelona, I saw older, more experienced comrades come to meetings and provide deep analyses that consider the struggle in all its aspects. I see the same sincerity and dedication in the older community here during discussions.”
