Ban on leaving the country for Leyla Güven not removed

The trial of the Kurdish HDP member of parliament Leyla Güven resumed in Amed today. Neither the obligation to register nor the ban on leaving the country was lifted.

Leyla Güven, HDP member and co-chair of the grassroots movement DTK (Democratic Society Congress), has been indicted for, among other things, "leading a terrorist organisation". Today was the ninth hearing of the trial before the 9th Heavy Penal Court of Diyarbakır.

Güven was represented by her lawyers Serdar Çelebi and Cemile Turhallı. The court declared that the registration requirement and the ban on leaving the country against the MP was "appropriate" and ordered its continuation. The hearing was adjourned until 8 April.

Leyla Güven is one of the most well-known figures of the political opposition in Northern Kurdistan and Turkey. Through a mass hunger strike, which she led, it was possible to break the isolation of the Kurdish representative Abdullah Öcalan for a short time last year.
