Barzani met U.S. President Obama

President of Federal Kurdistan Regional Government, Massoud Barzani, who has been in the U.S. to hold official talks, met with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Following the meeting which was also attended by Vice President Joe Biden, the White House released a statement which remarked that the meeting addressed relationships between Federal Kurdistan Regional and the U.S. as well as recent developments in the region.

During their talks, both sides emphasized the necessity of a prolonged and deepened relationship between the United States and the Kurdistan Region within the framework of a democratic, pluralistic and federal Iraq.

The leaders also discussed practical steps towards the continued strengthening of the relationship through maintaining high level meetings and discussions.

Furthermore it was agreed that the United States would broaden the services provided by its consulate in Erbil.

The President and Vice President of the United States reaffirmed their continued commitment to the historic relationship with the people and government of the Kurdistan Region, and their support for an Iraq that adheres to its constitution.

Remarking that “Obama and Biden expressed their support to Barzani’s ongoing participation in the political process in his country which is dominated by Iraqi constitution”, the statement stated that Biden and Barzani, during the business lunch before the meeting, handled a series of issues related with Iraq and the region as well as the steps to be taken for the increasing of services provided by the U.S. consulate in Hewler.

The White House statement notified that Biden and Barzani also handled the support they will ensure for the continuation of high-level consultations between American authorities and representatives of Kurdistan Regional Government.

Before the meeting with Biden and Obama, Barzani held talks with the U.S. Foreign Minister Hillary Clinton and the Defence Minister Leon Panetta. The meetings addressed the current situation in Kurdistan Region and the recent developments in Iraq and the Middle East.
