In an interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday, Kurdish Regional Government President Massoud Barzani confirmed that young Kurds from West Kurdistan who fled the Syrian army are trained at a camp in Federal Kurdistan Region.
We do not want to interfere directly in the situation in Syria but they have been trained, Barzani told Al Jazeera and said these young people have not yet been sent into Syria but are intended to be deployed there to fill any "security vacuum" as Syrian security forces retreat.
KRG President Barzani said that these Kurdish fighters, made up largely of Syrian Kurds who made their way across the border after deserting the Syrian army, will go into Syria should the High Kurdish Council requires them to go. He added that the fighting force would take its orders from this council, and added If not, they will wait for the situation to be sorted out because these people are from these areas and they will go back eventually.
Peoples Assembly (Meclîsa Gel) and Kurdish National Council (Encumena Nîþtîmanî ya Kurdî li Sûriyeyê-ENKS) decided to establish a High Kurdish Council to represent West Kurdistan people in national and international area in the context of the Hewler Agreement signed two weeks ago.
Referring to the seven point agreement, Barzani said that; The best and the biggest support that we could provide was to have a united position and in this we were successful.
He said Syrian forces withdrew from several towns in the largely Kurdish al-Hasekah region which are now controlled by Kurdish fighters.
