BDP launch campaign for Kurdish politicians

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Vice Chair Fatma Kurtulan announced a campaign against political operation targeting Kurdish politicians. Kurtalan called on people to support their struggle for democracy by taking part in the campaign.

Recently BDP Co-Chair Meral Danýþ Beþtaþ issued a written statement concerning the political operations and revealed that 7,748 people have been detained, and 3,895 people were convicted of crimes since April 14, 2009 except the latest arrests made last week. The number of arrests of the politicians related BDP is over 8,000 while the number of the convicted BDP related people is already far more than 4,000 with the latest waves in Ýstanbul, Diyarbakýr and particularly in Þýrnak.

All these arrests were made on the grounds that alleged connections to the Kurdistan Communities Congress (KCK).

Speaking against the operations, politicians, lawyers and journalists defined the operations as "smashing the process of dialogue with an axe and insisting on deadlock."

They also warned that the situation may begin to resemble the 1990s.

However, courts constantly continued sending people to prisons, today. The Silopi Night Court ordered five, including three under age children aged between 14 and 17, out of 10 Kurds to be arrested and sent to prison based on the allegations “Making propaganda for an illegal organization” and participating in protest demonstrations in the city.”

Five others are still waiting at the Silopi Police Department for first interrogation. They were arrested two days ago.
