The third hearing of the case about the murder of Berkin Elvan, who lost his life in the police attacks during the Gezi Resistance, was held today and the next hearing has been postponed to December 13.
15 years old Berkin Elvan had been shot with a gas canister during the Gezi Resistance in Istanbul’s Okmeydanı district and remained in a coma for 269 days, after which he lost his life. The third hearing in the case about the murder was held in the High Criminal Court No.17 in the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan. There was heavy police presence in the courthouse.
The hearing started with identifications and continued after a 15-minute break due to technical issues with the SEGBİS video conferencing system through which the suspect Fatih Dalgalı, on trial without arrest, was to attend virtually from Van.
The court chair spoke in the name of the judges’ council and stated that all witnesses and evidence should be gathered in the coming process.
Berkin Elvan’s lawyer Can Atalay spoke afterwards and stated that a date not far away should be given for the next hearing and that the suspect should be present in person. Can said they demanded the state television TRT to inspect the footage on Berkin Elvan but TRT didn’t, and that the judges’ council should press charges against the TRT for the failure to comply.
After the break, the judges’ council postponed the next hearing to December 13 to prepare witnesses and wait for the expert reports.
