Brutal police violence for speaking Kurdish

Ahmet K. who was seen on a video violently being beaten by a group of police officers in Fatih district of Istanbul said that he was subjected to police violence for speaking Kurdish with his brother on mobile phone.

The mobile camera capturing the incident from the beginning has once more revealed disproportionate force used by Turkish police against people with or without any reason. The incident which occurred on Tuesday caused outrage when it was published in many web sites on Wednesday. The video of the savagery was secretly captured by someone near the scene.

Ahmet K. who was driving in traffic before the incident took place was reportedly pulled over by a patrolling police vehicle which cut in front of him while he was taking a pregnant relative of his to hospital. The man’s wife and two children were also in the car which was soon after stopped by police officers.

The police officers in the patrolling vehicle took Ahmet K. out of the car and pushed him to the ground as many other police vehicles and officers arrived at the scene soon after. Around ten police officers started to hit the man brutally, not lending an ear to the screams of his wife who begged officers to stop for a long time. Besides batons, some officers in the video are seen beating the man with their belts.

Following the publishing of the video, Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu made a statement on the incident and said that five police officers in the video have been identified and suspended. Mutlu noted an investigation has been launched into the incident which astonished people as a clear evidence of police violence.

Victim Ahmet K., speaking to Habertürk TV on Wednesday, said the followings about the incident; “When a patrolling police vehicle made me a sign to stop, I told them that I was in a hurry as I was taking a pregnant relative of mine to a hospital. I don’t care, they said when I told them about my hurry and added that I was a soldier and was in Istanbul for a few days. At that moment I called my brother and spoke him Kurdish on phone, which made them call me a terrorist and start beating violently.”

Ahmet K. told that some officers later took him into a police vehicle and continued beating him. “They later took me to a deserted area and didn’t stop beating me until they left me to Haseki Hospital”, said the man and expressed his feelings saying that he feels ashamed of living in this country.

Investigation into police officers in Turkey are soon after covered up unconcluded as the investigations of disproportionate police force are obviously non-functional and for show only.

Apart from the videos coincidentally captured by witnesses, Turkish police causes thousands of cases of torture and violence every year, even causing deaths in peaceful demonstrations. However, police officers continue benefiting from impunity as the victims of their violence usually obtain no result from their complaints.
