The Rende municipality (in the Italian region of Calabria) unanimously approved the motion for the conferral of the honorary citizenship to Abdullah Öcalan.

"Abdullah Öcalan had a central role for the peaceful solution of the Kurdish question, and his life is a testimony of building a present and a future of peace, against cultural, religious and ethnic differences."

The Manna administration, having taken note of the appeal presented by Unical professor Laura Corradi to support the international petition for Öcalan's freedom and the request received from UIKI Onlus - Kurdistan Information Office in Italy, as well as the signatures of a group of professors from the University of Calabria and local associations decided to go ahead with the process of awarding the honour.

The municipalities that, to date, have given the keys to the city to Öcalan are Campobasso, Castelbottaccio, Palermo, Naples, Palagonia, Reggio Emilia, Martano, Fossalto, Riace and Pinerolo.
