Cancer patient stopped at airport, under detention in hospital

Cancer patient Ayten Sarikaya Kesler was taken into custody and kept in hospital after she arrived at Istanbul airport accused of "insulting the president".

Ayten Sarikaya Kesler arrived in Turkey from Switzerland on Tuesday morning. The woman, 53, was detained during passport control at Istanbul airport.

Kesler was issued an arrest warrant because of posts she shared on Facebook. She is accused of "making propaganda for an illegal organization" and "insulting the President". After being stopped she was taken to the police station at the airport.

Despite suffering from cancer, Kesler was taken to Bakırköy Courthouse, and asked to be arrested.

Keser, who got worse during the hearing, lost consciousness but despite this, police tried to force her to sign the interrogation as she was lying on the floor.

Keser has been held in detention in a private hospital in Bahçelievler since Tuesday. It was learned that Kesler and the person accompanying her were to be taken to Bakırköy Prison.

Giving the latest information on Kesler's situation, lawyer Gülizar Tuncer said: "Judges and prosecutors have clearly lost their humanity. The judicial bodies are now working as executers of the ruling government."
