'Canton administrations in Rojava should be contacted directly'
Gisela Pentaker, from Doctors Without Borders, spoke at a panel organised by the German Green Party in Hannover, saying that ISIS attacks and the trade embargo had not prevented the people of Rojava from developing their model. Green MP Kinder from the Federal Parliament said: "If assistance is to be provided the Kurdish forces should be spoken to directly and the aid conveyed by the UN. In that way there will be no reliance on the whims of any state,” adding that the canton administrations in Rojava should be directly contacted. Writer Memo Şahin said that humanitarian aid was being randomly obstructed by the Turkish authorities.
The Hannover Green Party organised a panel on ISIS attacks, Kobanê, Sinjar and the threat posed to Europe by ISIS.
Nidersachsen Green Party MP Belit Onayına chaired the panel, at which the speakers were Gisela Pentaker, from Doctors Without Borders, Green Party MP Sven Cristian Kinder and European Peace Assembly member and writer Memo Şahin.
Pentaker: Attack and embargo have not cowed the people of Rojava
Gisela Pentaker, who recently visited Rojava with a delegation, described what she had seen: "Neither the attacks of ISIS gangs nor the embargo has prevented the people of Rojava from developing their model. Such a model in the Middle East such be supported and officially. This is vital.”
Memo Şahin said that aid sent to refugees was arbitrarily obstructed by the Turkish AKP government and called for the international community to deal directly with the Canton administrations. Şahin added that there was a need for a humanitarian corridor.
Kinder: The UN should get involved in order to prevent state obstruction
Sven Cristian Kinder emphasised that aid to the Kurds fighting ISIS should not be limited to weapons and said that efforts must be made to find a political resolution. Kinder stressed that states were reluctant to provide arms to Kurdish forces on account of trade and political relations with Turkey, adding: "If assistance is to be provided the Kurdish forces should be spoken to directly and the aid conveyed by the UN. In that way there will be no reliance on the whims of any state,”
It will be proposed that canton administrations should be directly contacted
Kinder added that Turkey played a role in the attacks on Rojava and the obstruction of aid, calling on Europe to put pressure on states, meaning Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, supporting or turning a blind eye to attacks. Kinder said that next week in the Federal Parliament they would propose 600 million euros in aid be provided to states taking in refugees, and also that the canton administrations in Rojava be dealt with directly.
