Central Electoral Board dismisses President of Catalunya

The Central Electoral Board has ruled to dismiss the president of the Generalitat of Catalunya, Quim Torra, from his post of regional deputy, after his non-firm sentence to a year and a half for "disobedience".

Right wing parties, PP, Vox and Citizens, had asked for Torra to be dismissed and the Central Electoral Board decision implies the cessation of Torra as president.

The resolution of the body responsible for ensuring the transparency and neutrality of electoral processes is a shock of unpredictable consequences on the Catalan political board and adds uncertainty to the investiture of the socialist Pedro Sánchez as president of the Government.

The body has agreed to "void the credential of elected deputy to the Parliament of Catalonia by the electoral district of Barcelona of Mr. Joaquim Torra i Pla." The decision will take effect on the date on which the agreement is notified in full.

Following the decision of the Central Electoral Board, Esquerra Republicana, the party which has signed the agreement with Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez to open a negotiation table for Catalunya between the next central government and the Generalitat, will meet today.

ERC called an emergency meeting of the party executive today to "analyze the decisions of the Central Electoral Board and coordinate the response and assess the consequences for the immediate political schedule."

The Central Electoral Board also resolved on Friday that ERC European deputy, Oriol Junqueras (currently in prison) cannot take his seat.

On May 26, 2019 Junqueras was elected MEP. However, the Supreme Court did not allow the ERC leader to get out of jail to pick up his Europarliamentary record.

Instead, the Supreme Court presented a preliminary ruling before the Court of Justice of the European Union indicating that it was this body that should decide on the case. The Luxembourg court ruled that the ERC leader should have been released and that he had immunity when he was proclaimed MEP one day after the trial to the Catalan leaders ended. The Supreme Court had ruled to lift the immunity, after Junqueras had been elected.
