Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputies took the parliamentary oath today, putting an end to the oath-taking boycott they have been carrying out to protest against the imprisonment of two of their deputies.
The opposition Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) is continuing its boycott and its executives have stated that unless concrete and meaningful steps are taken in order to overcome the difficulties the party will not end its protest.
It took the CHP two rounds of talks with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to agree on a generally worded statement as a way out of the deadlock. The statement looks more like a “face-saving” measure for the CHP as it failed to secure any promise from the AK Party over possible legislation to adjust the status of the jailed deputies. Indeed there was no mention of the jailed deputies.
