The trustee appointed by the AKP to Cizre Municipality, which is now governed by Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), handed over the parks on the banks of the Tigris River, the only green area of the city, to the Special Provincial Administration.
Abandoned in the hands of the Special Provincial Administration the parks on the River Tigris banks soon became a garbage depo representing a serious problem for Cizre.
The parks were left and garbage was not collected and people who flock to parks by the river to cool off, especially in the evening, had often complained about it.
Unaware of the transfer made by the trustee, some people accused the municipality of not doing its job.
Cizre Municipality co-mayor Berivan Kutlu said: "The Tigris River has a very big and deep meaning for this geography and its people. So far, the municipality has always been responsible for the planning and maintenance of the river and its environment. When we won the election after the trustee, we came across the fact that our Tigris had been taken from our hands and given to the Special Provincial Administration. The important thing for us is the protection and maintenance of this value in the best way."
Today, the state of the parks is very grave. "Unfortunately for a long time garbage was not collected. Trees and other plants are not maintained and very expensive cafes were opened all along the river banks," said Kutlu.
Stating that parks should be open to the public and free areas, Kutlu said: "While we were responsible for the parks, we were giving a small number of cafes to our citizens who really needed an income, and a portion of the income belonged to the municipality. That way both the municipality and the people benefited from the parks."
Kutlu ended her remarks by saying: "We have carried out a campaign to collect the garbage of these parks voluntarily with our women's council for one month, but our aim is to reclaim the parks."
