Conference on Freedom of the Press in Istanbul

The Platform of Freedom for Journalists is organizing a Conference on Freedom of the Press on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day. At the conference, which will have an international participation, people will demand the amendment of all legal regulations that restrict the freedom of expression.



The Platform of Freedom for Journalists, consisting of 93 professional organizations, agreed on the convention of a Conference on Freedom of the Press in Ýstanbul on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day. The congress, which will begin on May 2with the opening of "Statue of Freedom of Expression" at Macka Democracy Park, will take place at Akatlar Cultural Center. With the congress, the platform will express the demands for the release of imprisoned journalists, their trial without arrest as well as the amendment of all legal arrangements on Turkish Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Law that restrict the freedom of press and expression, kill the freedom of communication through wiretapping and block internet access.

The Conference on Freedom of the Press will be held open to press laborers as well as representatives of all professional organizations, media organizations and international professional organizations. The conference will be attended by Philippe Leruth, Vice President of European Federation of Journalists; Javier Fernandez Arribas, Vice President of European Union of Journalists; Chris Conybeare, Secretary General of the World Press Association; Steven Ellis, Advisor to the International Press Institute Press Freedom; Johann Bihr, European Office Representative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF); South East European Media Organization (SEEMO) and Project Manager Mirjana Tomic. The congress will also be open to local journalist associations, representatives of common, regional and local broadcasting media, all sued journalists and families of imprisoned journalists. The congress, where Ankara Bar Association Lawyer Metin Feyzioglu will make a presentation on recent developments concerning the freedom of press and expression in Turkey, will end with the publication of a final declaration.
