Congress Inititative takes shape

Political, ethnic and social organizations in Turkey gathered under Initiative Congress. The Congress Hall was decorated with placards written on “We are uniting” in 13 different languages.

The Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block leaded the Congress by dissolving the Umbrella Organization which included limited groups and organizations comparing to the new initiative.

Representatives from foremost human rights organizations, leftist parties, association, activists, writers, trade unions, confederations etc. in Turkey gathered agreeably with the principle of 50 percent women in the hall.

“Equality and freedom for people and beliefs,” “To gain democracy,” “against male dominance, gender discrimination and inequality,” “for peaceful and democratic solution in Kurdish question,” “against economic destruction and depredation of nature,” “we are uniting against homophobia” and “We are uniting against imperialist attacks and invasions” were some of the banners hanged on the walls.

The target of the Congress is to create a united political movement which can embrace people under pressure because of their beliefs, or ethnic and national origin.

Ahmet Türk, Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair, asked participants and attendees of the Congress Initiative Assembly to announce the day of the meeting as the day of breaking the chains.

“I’m so happy today because I saw a whole picture of Turkey. As a senior politician in Turkey, today is the day which I become more hopeful than ever I have been for a long time. This unity is what we have longed for decades,” said Türk, speaking in the Congress, in Ankara.

Attendees had many speeches during the Congress’ first part and emphasized the importance of unity and struggle against others who try to discriminate and divide people regarding their national, ethnical and cultural origins.

Speaking at the meeting, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Istanbul Deputy, writer and producer Sýrrý Süreyya Önder presented his greetings to imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and other revolutionary leaders who taught revolution.

Another deputy Levent Tüzel also addressed the attendees; “We have big responsibility to protect this unity and promote it. The Congress is the only option for us who defends freedom and equality. We know that we are neither desperate nor alone. Freedom will be possible with the united workers and people.”

BDP Mersin Deputy Ertuðrul Kürkçü said that it is highly honorable to be under the same roof with senior Kurdish politicians Ahmet Türk and Leyla Zana who have been suffered for decades because of not compromising from their political line.
