CPT visited Turkey

European Council’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) released a written statement on its website to announce that an "ad-hoc” delegation under the Committee visited Turkey on 21-28 June to examine the circumstances of jailed children in consideration of the allegations of ill treatment against the children in Pozantý prison.

The CPT statement said that the delegation visited the juvenile parts of Istanbul-Maltepe, Antep and Diyarbakýr E Type prisons as well as the Sincan prison in Ankara where Pozantý victim children were transferred after the revealing of allegations. It was also stated that the delegation held talks with Turkish officials concerning the fires that broke out in many Turkish prisons in June.

The statement didn’t outline any information about a visit to Imralý prison, but added that PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan’s situation was also brought forward during the talks with Turkish officials. “The delegation put forward various questions as to the situation of prisoners in Imralý F Type High Security Closed Prison and called attention to these prisoners’ opportunity for visit by their families and lawyers”, said the CPT statement.

It was noted in the statement that the delegation held talks with the Minister of Justice, Sadullah Ergin, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as UNICEF representative in Ankara, Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey.

The CPT delegation consisted of 2nd Vice-President Jean-Pierre Restellini, Julia Kozma from Austria, Jan Pfeifer from the Czech Republic, Head of Division Michael Neurauter, Petr Hnatik of the CPT’s Secretariat and Director of Bruges Prison (Belgium) Jurgen Van Poecke.
