Death toll in Van reaches 573 - UPDATE

Death toll in Van reached 573, said this morning AFAD (the crisis desk set up by the presidency). Van was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Sunday. Snow has begun to fall in the region while tents are still not enough to give shelter to all of the people affected by the quake. International aids are continuing to arrive in the city, but it is the absence of the state what strikes most. The state has tried to justify the guilty slowness in sending rescue teams and aids immediately after the quake. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan has said that "it is normal to have some disorganization and delay in the first twenty-four hours after the quake", fueling even more anger among the thousands forced to stay on the street under the snow.

BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) municipalities in the region have been at the forefront in delivering aids and means to the population of Van.
