Death toll in Van up to 596

The death toll in Van rose to 596 today, the Emergency Presidency Commission said. The number of wounded is 4,152 while 188 people have been rescued from the debris.

As rescue operations continue, the costs of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake which hit Van last Sunday are beginning to be calculated.

According to the region of Van governor it is estimated that to date, 13 million Turkish Lira (some 6 million Euro) have been spent so far, while some 22 million 320thousand TL (some 12 million Euro) have been raised through the aid campaigns.

But the anticipated countrywide urban renewal project could create a construction market with a total investment size of $255 billion (TL 448.8 billion), according to analysts.

Turkey sits on a land crisscrossed by three major fault lines and a majority of the buildings across the country are in need of reinforcement so that their vulnerability to an earthquake can be minimized. Last Sunday's earthquake was the second worst since 1999 when a magnitude 7.6 quake in the western city of Ýzmit killed 17,000 people.
