Attending a meeting in Van before the ordinary congress of the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party), BDP Group Chairman Selahattin Demirtaþ made statements concerning the current developments in the country.
Remarking that the DTK (Democratic Society Congress) is pointed as the target since the declaration of the Democratic Autonomy, Demirtaþ said the followings; “It is seen that there is a preparation for a political operation on DTK in the coming process. Newspapers are preparing the psychological ground for the operation showing the DTK as a target. The transfer of many detainees in the region to the prisons in Black Sea Region is a sign of the operations to be carried out in the coming processes.”
Expressing that the BDP will perform a strong rising with the ordinary congress on September 4, Demirtaþ noted that the works and meetings for the congress will be completed within a short period of time.
Demirtaþ, expressing his views on the new constitution, said that none of the parties should stand in the centre during the constitutional works that should be conducted by conseil constitutionnels, conciliation commissions and constitutional commissions.
Demirtaþ reminded that the BDP has always sided with the removal of military tutelage’s constraint on politics and public, adding that even the worst civilian government is better than junta regimes. Demirtaþ continued as follows; “The last Supreme Military Council (YAÞ)meeting strengthened the civilian politics but the non-availability of a military tutelage doesn’t directly mean democracy. We still haven’t experienced a process to institutionalize and strengthen democracy.”
Demirtaþ pointed out that a deadlock and tension will rise and not any contribution will be made to the solution through the operations planned by the government for the coming processes, as a part of which arrestees in the prisons of the region are transferred to other regions to make room for new prisoners. Demirtaþ said; “They will lose if they are planning to make the same mistake by conducting a new political operation. The Works of the DTK and BDP continue with a great self-confidence. Make sure that we will not lose if the government conducts political operations and arrests instead of assessing these suggestions of us.”
Mentioning the recent high rate of woman suicides and murders, Demirtaþ told that the BDP has organized various campaigns and serious works on the subjects. Demirtaþ said; “ There has been a significant increase in woman suicides during the AKP government’s period, however the Prime Minister has never made a statement about the murders seen during his period. The silence of the Prime Minister against hundreds of woman killings during the year means an approval. We are calling on the Prime Minister to make a statement about the subject. We refuse all kinds of violence against women.”
Demirtaþ added that they will take the necessary steps regarding the new Chief of Staff Necdet Ozel, who was recorded commanding an operation near Ballýkaya (Bilika) village where 20 PKK guerrillas were killed with chemical weapons in 1999.
Regarding the return of former leader of Kurdistan Sosyalist Parti (PSK) Kemal Burkay to Turkey, Demirtaþ said that it is still too early to say that Turkey is a free country where Kurdish politicians can freely do politics.
