Demirtaþ: Erdoðan should answer to KCK on ceasefire

Speaking at the iftar (the evening meal during Ramadan) tent in Diyarbakýr, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ called on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan to answer to most recent KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) statement which said that it is the PM who should be urged to end the ongoing war.

We need peace all the time, not only in Ramadan month, underlined Demirtaþ and remarked that “Everyone should make an effort for justice, peace and brotherhood as required by our religion, belief, world view and the value we attach to humanity, our territory and cultures.”

Asked about the signature campaign intellectuals, authors and artists have recently launched for peace and negotiation, BDP co-chair said that; “These calls are made to the Turkish state and the KCK organization, not to the BDP. It is the Prime Minister who should give an answer to intellectuals’ call and to the recent KCK statement which pointed to Erdoðan as the authorized addressee to ensure a solution to the Kurdish problem.”

Demirtaþ underlined that peace cannot be ensured unilaterally and noted that “We as BDP members demand an end to the ongoing bloodshed and isolation on Kurdish people’s leader Öcalan, beginning of negotiations and re-discussion of protocols that had been put forward in the earlier negotiation process. I believe the way for a solution process could be paved if these points are reviewed well by the government.”

Asked about the current situation in Syria, Demirtaþ commented the Baas regime and opposition terror and violence as unacceptable. BDP co-chair remarked that the actors of the conflict in Syria want to pull the Kurdistan territory and the Kurdish people into the war and said that; “We consider the unity of the Kurdish people in Syria as an advantage and the formation of Kurdish people’s defense committees as an assurance. The Kurdish people in Syria want to govern themselves with their own status and we define this demand as their right for national self-determination.”

BDP co-chair underlined that Turkey should read the developments in Syria well and added that; “The Syrian regime could develop a cooperation with Kurds in the scope of recognizing the rights of the Kurdish people in that region. Such an association could also have a positive effect on Turkey by paving the way for the solution of the Kurdish problem. However, if Turkish foreign policy intends to suppress the Kurdish people in that region, this attempt could lead to different kind of dangers and tensions in the region.”
