The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) issued a statement in solidarity with the HDP. The statement condemned the government attacks on democracy in Turkey.
The statement said: "The DSA International Committee stands in solidarity with the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and the oppressed peoples of Turkey in the face of criminalization by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Turkey’s other reactionary ethnonationalist forces. The IC calls on the Turkish government to stop its anti-democratic prosecution of the HDP, a part of the broader fascist campaign to destroy democracy in Turkey and suppress the Kurdish liberation movement."
Recalling that, in March 2021, the government filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court of Turkey in an attempt to ban the HDP, the statement said: "This lawsuit resulted in an indictment calling for the closure of the HDP based on allegations that the party is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, a political formation designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its NATO allies.
The United States has long supported the most autocratic, nationalistic and militaristic elements of the Turkish state. By turning a blind eye to the repressive and anti-democratic actions of the Turkish government and continuing to arm its NATO ally, the U.S. is complicit in the repression of ethnic minorities and the degradation of democratic institutions and practices."
The statement continued: "In addition to the government’s attack on the HDP through the judicial system, democratically-elected HDP politicians have also been forced out of office, imprisoned, and killed. As the trial to ban the HDP approaches its conclusion, just weeks before the 2023 Turkish general elections, the IC is heeding the call for an international day of solidarity with the HDP on March 13, approximately one month before the party defends itself in court. We express the utmost support for the People’s Democratic Party, the third-largest political party in Turkey, a party at the forefront of protecting the rights of Turkey’s ethnic minorities, and a force for freedom and democracy in the Middle East."
