Deputy Prime Minister says government to call referendum on new Constitution

The government will call for a referendum on a new constitution expected to be drafted after elections even if a sufficient parliamentary majority votes for it, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arýnç has said.

“Irrespective of how many votes will be cast in support of the new constitution, we will still call for a referendum on it,” Arýnç, speaking to representatives of local television stations, said in Ankara on Monday night. “We need this referendum because the constitution is at stake here.”

On September 12, 2010, 58 percent of voters approved a package of amendments to the Constitution, reforming the judiciary, further restricting the military's powers and expanding individual rights and freedoms. The BDP called for the boycotting of the referendum, which indeed in many areas was boycotted.
