DIHA news director taken into custody

Dicle News Agency (DIHA) Diyarbakýr Regional News Director Sertaç Kayar was taken into custody in Diyarbakýr on Thursday.

Kayar was reportedly detained by police on the grounds of an arrest warrant issued for him in the scope of an earlier lawsuit filed against him. Kayar was referred to the Court of Diyarbakýr.

The news director was taken into custody for the same reason in the district of Kulp on 29 June and he was released one day later after a series of judicial proceedings at 7th High Criminal Court.

Turkey has the largest number of jailed journalists in the world according to the Platform of Solidarity with Imprisoned Journalists. 97 journalists, including 19 publishers and editors, are currently held behind bars in Turkish prisons. Most of the jailed press members are made up of Kurdish journalists who are accused of being members of the KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) organization.

The number of detentions of journalists has incrementally increased in the last one year as Turkey fell 10 places on Reporters’ International Press Freedom Index to 148 among 179 countries.
