Doctors say Sırrı Süreyya Önder's life-threatening condition is worsening

Doctors treating Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a member of the Imralı Delegation who is in intensive care at a hospital in Istanbul, said, “Our patient's neurological brain reflexes have decreased and brain edema continues.”

The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Deputy Speaker of Parliament and member of the Imralı Delegation Sırrı Süreyya Önder was hospitalized on the night of 15 April following a cardiac arrest. His treatment in the intensive care unit at Florence Nightingale Hospital continues.

Önder's doctors made a statement outside the hospital regarding his current condition.

Prof. Dr. Çavlan Çiftçi, Rector of Florence Nightingale Hospitals responsible for medical procedures, stated that Önder’s neurological condition is deteriorating: “For this reason, we have reached another breaking point. Our patient's neurological brain reflexes have decreased and brain edema continues.”

Çavlan Çiftçi continued, “There is currently cerebral blood flow. All these findings indicate that the patient's life-threatening condition is worsening. However, we will continue all treatments with patience and wait with patience.”

Breaking point

Responding to questions from journalists after the announcement, Prof. Dr. Yasef Özsarfati said: “The breaking point is this: while problems with the heart system were previously at the forefront, neurological problems have recently come to the fore. Therefore, the breaking point is the gradual deterioration of the neurological condition. The reflexes observed during examinations are gradually decreasing, and the findings in the records have begun to show a state of unresponsiveness. We know that the deterioration is due to a brain condition caused by a lack of oxygen reaching the brain. As a result of this condition, the patient has cerebral edema. The brain is swollen. It is very difficult to say that the criteria we have are improving. There are no signs of brain death at this time. The tests conducted have not revealed anything of the sort.”

‘’We are trying to perform a miracle’

Prof. Dr. Ertan Sağbaş stated: “At first, his heart was contracting well. However, there has been no further progress. If we were to stop the echocardiographic support now, his heart would not be able to maintain blood circulation. This is because cardiac progression has plateaued. For example, the neurological condition affected the lungs and pulmonary edema developed. There was bleeding last week and it stopped two or three days ago. Many organs are inevitably interconnected. But the echo is compensating for the lungs. So, there is no problem with circulation at the moment. We cannot say anything about the patient's neurological or cardiac condition. We are looking at the current data and adjusting the treatment accordingly. So far, there are no signs of infection. We are changing the antibiotics and taking immediate action as needed. Therefore, we are continuing intensive treatment. It has been eight days since we stopped giving any sedatives. So, we are waiting. In other words, we are trying to perform a miracle.”
