Dozens of students detained at Istanbul University -UPDATE

A group, reportedly involving extreme Islamists, attacked students at Istanbul University on Monday. The attack of the group was followed by the attack of police teams targeting students in the campus area.

According to the statements of a student who spoke to Bianet, a number of police officers entered the Faculty of Science and Letters where a number of students were reported injured and detained in the police attack.

The conflict at the university started last week as democrat students staged a demonstration and issued a press statement to protest against the brutal police attack on Kurdish and left-wing students at Dicle University on 11 April.

Tension continues at the university as at least 25 democrat and Kurdish students have been taken into custody as a result of the police attack at the Faculty of Science and Letters on Tuesday.

Following the clashes between left-wing and Islamist groups yesterday, a group, calling themselves “Muslim Youth”, have once again attempted to attack democrat students early Tuesday.

Police teams have blocked the faculty area, denying students permission to get inside and outside the faculty. The number of detentions is expected to increase.
