DTK calls on public to act as Güven enters 41st day of fast

DTK called on public opinion to act on the 41st day of the hunger strike carried out by co-chair Leyla Güven.

Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Hakkari deputy Leyla Güven has entered the 41st day of hunger strike. She is demanding to end the isolation regime imposed on Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The DTK said in a written statement that “the hunger strike has spread to Kurdistan, Turkey and Europe” and added: “our Co-chair’s demand is very clear and unequivocal. The isolation imposed on Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan has been further increased to the extent of becoming absolute isolation. Absolute isolation cannot be considered human, moral and legal, and certainly cannot be politically acceptable. It is clear that social isolation will not be achieved and instead social chaos will be deepened unless this absolute isolation is lifted and damages to social, political and cultural peace will increase.”

The DTK statement also said: “The way to ensure peace and normalization in all areas of life is through the proper understanding and response to the demand of our co-chair Leyla Güven. Her demand is in fact the demand of all people.”

The statement ended with the DTK calling “on the public, our people, labor, peace and democracy circles to embrace the demand of our co-chair on the 41st day of her hunger strike. Likewise, we call on national and international institutions and organizations, and human rights organizations to speak out on this issue.”
