In a press conference on the Week of the disabled people - 10-16 May-, Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Commission for the Disabled people spokesman Muhsin Batgı said they considered the problems of the disabled people as a problem of democracy, freedom, equality and justice.
Batgı pointed out that the disabled people needed to take part in all areas of life as free and equal citizens and have the right to comment on the structuring of the country. Batgı suggested that all political parties should ensure a ten percent quota for the disabled people to guarantee their representation in the parliament.
Batgı, remarking that they supported the ongoing process in search of a solution to the Kurdish question, demanded the urgent release of all sick and disabled prisoners and the removal of mines across the country to prevent further injuries and and deaths.
Noting that employment is the major problem for disabled people, Batıg stated that there was a need to improve the working conditions of the disabled people, to provide them with loan and houses, to open courses to enable their working and involvement in the daily life and, to follow policies aimed at ensure free and equal citizenship for all.
Batıg added that the disabled people in Turkey were facing great diffiiculties in many areas of life, including schools, universities, hospitals and courthouses.
