Egyptian Parliament clears way for Libya intervention

The Egyptian Parliament approved a possible combat mission of Egyptian troops in Libya. This threatens to turn the war in Libya into a conflagration.

On Monday came the expected decision of the Egyptian parliament. MPs cleared the way for a military intervention in Libya by voting in favour of sending the army "on combat missions outside the borders of the Egyptian state to defend national security". Even though Libya is not mentioned directly, it is generally known that it is a specific mission in Libya. The Libyan parliament in Tobruk had asked Egypt for a military operation against the Muslim Brotherhood government and its Turkish allies. Egypt sees itself acutely threatened by the advance of the alliance of "unity government", Salafist mercenaries from Syria and Turkish troops. Through the Muslim Brotherhood, Turkey not only wants to strengthen its influence in Libya, but also directly threatens Egypt. By strengthening the Muslim Brotherhood in North Africa, Turkey is trying to gain influence in Egypt as well and to re-establish a loyal Islamist regime there.

The Egyptian Parliament's approval should be seen first of all as a warning. By increasing the pressure, the USA and NATO are wanted be persuaded to take serious measures to stem the advance of the Islamists in Libya. An advance of the Muslim Brotherhood regime on the coastal town of Sirte was described by the Egyptian regime leader Sisi as a "red line".
