Ersanlý: Detained because I am Turkish

Radikal journalist Ömer Þahin has quoted academic Prof. Büþra Ersanlý, who is currently in jail for alleged links with the KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) as saying that "For those who are not used to the idea of a Turk being a member of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party [BDP], it is a tragedy. They have regarded the Kurds as slaves for years. They wanted to deter me from this path as an intellectual, as a woman and as a Turk at the same time".

Ersanlý is currently on trial along with other dozens of academics and intellectuals. As for the possibility of being released thank to the third judicial reform package, Ersanlý is quoted to have said: "I am a BDP member. That’s all,” she said. “As an arrested academic, I can’t expect much. I don’t think anything about my release. The package does not matter to me."

As for her life in prison, the professor is reported to have said that she is learning Kurdish in order to catch up with the politics of the BDP.

Radikal also stated that Ersanlý, who had been arrested due to courses she gave in the Politics Academy of the BDP, has established an academy of her own in the prison since her arrest. She gave, writes Radikal, “Introduction to Ideologies and Political Science” lessons to 25 women convicts in a common room.
