European Congress delegation to visit mayor Güven in prison

A delegation from the European Congress headed by Anders Knape, Sweden (EPP/CD), including Leen Verbeek, Netherlands (R, SOC), and Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer, is going to visit to Leyla Güven, member of the Turkish delegation to the Congress, currently in prison in Diyarbakýr.

The delegation is accompanied by Gaye Doðanoglu (EPP/CD), the Head of the Turkish delegation to the Congress. Ms Güven, Mayor of Viransehir Municipality, has been in prison since December 2009, like other local politicians, accused of abetting, and membership of a terrorist organisation. The situation of Ms Güven has been addressed in a series of debates at different Congress meetings. In preparation for a Report on this case, which will be debated at the 21st Congress Session (18 to 20 October) in Strasbourg, the Congress asked the Turkish authorities to facilitate a visit to Ms Güven in prison, in order to allow Congress members to obtain first-hand information on the situation of their fellow member.
