Families in Gebze: We will be here every day!

The vigil promoted by the families of the hunger strikers in Gebze Women Prison has been blocked once again. The families said: “We will be here tomorrow.”

The 31st day of the Vigil promoted by the families of prisoners on hunger strike in Gebze Women Prison passed with yet new harassment by the police.

The hunger strike resistance demanding the end of isolation against Abdullah Öcalan sees thousands of prisoners involved. Since 30 April 15 prisoners have turned their hunger strike into death fast and today, 15 more prisoners will join them.

The families gathered in front of the HDP Gebze Provincial building and began walking towards the prison. The families were stopped by police.

Sinan Zincir, a lawyer from the Jurists for Freedom Association (ÖHD) told police that to prevent the families walking towards the prison was actually illegal, yet police kept blocking the relatives of prisoners.

HDP Gebze District President Ebubekir Çoban, who had joined the families and came to the action to show his support was actually threatened by police.

The families said they will be in front of Gebze prison once again today, Friday.

Hatice Calıhan's mother, Zeynep Calıhan, recalled that her daughter has been on hunger strike since 1 March. “We want dialogue, we want a solution so that our daughters and sons can call off the hunger strike. Let’s dialogue with Abdullah Öcalan begin, let’s negotiations begin.”

Zeynep Calıhan underlined that “the police officers insult us in front of the prison. They torture and insult not only us, but also those who support us. But these things cannot intimidate us, we will not give up. For our sons and daughters, for life. We will leave this action when our kids will be free.”
